The Youth Hikers: Trek to Jewel Fort Ratangad on Sunday, 02nd November 2014

Dear Friends,

We are glad to invite you trek to Ratangad on Sunday 2nd November 2014.

Brief Introduction about Ratangad: -

Region: Igatpuri-Bhandardara
Fort Height: 4225 ft. ( Above M.S.L. )
Type: Hill
Grade: Medium

Base Village : Ratanwadi
District: Ahmednagar As the name speaks, Ratanad is described as “Jewel Fort of Sahayadri”. It gets the name as it is origin for the river “Amrutvahini”. Located in the district of Ahmednagar, it stands tall to 4255 feet above mean sea level. The fort is about 2000 years old and is situated at banks of Bhandardara lake.

The main attraction of this fort is “Amurteshwar” temple which falls into “Hemadpant Era” ( way back to eighth century ). It truly defines the ancient sculpture of our great ancestors due to it’s carving.

Ratangad is a natural rock peak with a cavity at top that measure 10 feet high and 60 feets wide, thus forming a needle eye sort of appearance called as “Nedhe”. This is caused due to Wind Erosion and one can experience the nature’s power over there.

It has a water cistern which is usually filled with water throughout the year and was one of the largest rainwater catchment area for its time.
Fort has a main entrance called as “Tryambak Darwaza.” Also we have some remains of smaller entrance to the fort called as “Chor Darwaza”. Two ladders have been added to provide easy access to the main fort area.

Malvan : Malvan is a town in Sindhudurg District, the southernmost district of Maharashtra. This culturally and historically important town is a Taluka place in Sindhudurg District. Malvan taluka consists of villages Aangnechi wadi, Achra, Khalchi Devli, Jamdul, Juva, Pankhol and Sarjekot. Malvan is wellknown for its historical monument, the Sindhudurg fort, which is beautiful and vast in area. Malwani Folk are very hardworking and helpful. The main occupation here is fishing. The staple diet of Malvani people is fish and rice.It is also known for its variety of mangos (Malvani Hapus - Alphonso). Sweets such as Malvani Khaja (Made from Gram - besan flour and coated jaggery) and Malvani Ladoos are famous across the state.A very important part of Malavni culture is a Malvani Dashavtar, a drama-play based on mythological stories. There are many interesting places to visit in Malvan and this can be noticed with the recent increase in forieng visitors to this region.

 Watersports at Malvan

Bharadi devi : Bharadi Devi(goddess) is one goddess one just can't think of missing when one is in Malvan. This is the famous “active goddess” situated at Anganewadi, 14 kms from Malvan. Angnewadi is the small hamlet of Masure village. The Bharadi devi (goddess) is very famous for her wish-fulfilling power. Devotees express their wish before her and once the wish is fulfilled they come to express their gratitude.
Tarkarli Beach : Tarkarli is a narrow stretch of beach with pristine waters, located at the convergence of the Karli River and the Arabian Sea. This place has gained prominence because of its transparently clear seas, where on a fairly sunny day, one can see the sea- bed up to a depth of 20 feet. This beach can be rightly called as ‘Queen Beach’ of Sindhudurg. Sea and sand blending in enchanting natural harmony, gracefully cruising boats in calm and cool river waters add to the beauty of this beach.

Kunkeshwar Temple : Kunkeshwar Temple, an ancient Shiva Temple is located in Kunkeshwar village, 14 Kms from Devgad town. A pristine beach with a very long stretch of seashore and white sand adds to the beauty of temple surroundings.

Kunkeshwar Temple

Rameshwar : Some destinations own such historical peculiarities which sets them apart from other ones. Place named Achara is one of them. It’s a small village in Malvan Taluka. We are all aware that in historical times people were gifted with “Inams, Jagirs or Watan(land)” by kings or emperors for their achievements. Achara too is Inam or Jagir, but it’s owner or Inamdar (landowner) is not a layman. Chhatrapati Shambhu Raje of Kolhapur gave this Inam to Shri Dev Rameshwar ( i.e. Lord Shiva). Achara boasts the historical temple of Lord Shiva, popularly known as ‘inamdar Shri Dev Rameshwar’ Architecture of the temple is grand and spectacular.

 Rameshwar

Parshuram Temple : In this village(Achara) there is a well known temple of Bhagwan Parshuram because of it this village got this name. Tourists who want to enjoy natural beauty of this area should reserve some time during the trip.
People here used to know time from the sound from cannon. This temple is an excellent example of ancient sculpture. The atmosphere of this temple fascinates everyone. Calm and beautiful nature and idol of Parshuram made up of black stone and other idols charming appearance take us in different world. The building of this temple is also an excellent example of architecture.

Vijay-Durg (pic Courtesy Internet)
The oldest fort on Sindhudurg coast constructed in the regime of Raja Bhoj of shilahar dynasty in 1205 (construction period 1193-1205). The fort was earlier known as "Gheria" as it is situated in the village "Girye. The earlier fort encompassed area of 5 acres and was surrounded by sea on all the 4 sides. Over the years the eastern trench was reclaimed and the road was constructed theron. Presently the area of fort is about 17 acres and is surrounded by Arabian sea on its three sides. (1 acre= 4840 sq yards).
The Architectural marvel:
1) The 200m long, undersea/underland tunnel from the fort to the Dhulap’s palatial house in the village is man-made. The roof of the tunnel has been pinched to protect it from land-slides and it is also well ventilated. Now the tunnel is partially blocked. Using latest technology if this tunnel is cleared it will be a major tourist attraction and will be of great help for architectural students/history lovers.
2) The fencing compound wall constructed at 8-10 m depth undersea, 300ft from the fort is another architectural wonder. The wall constructed with laterite stones is 122 mtr long, 3 mtr high & 7 mtr in breadth. Majority of attacking ships met their watery grave after colliding on this wall as this wall is not visible above the sea level.

Ganpatipule (depends on time and traffic):
Ganpatipule is one of the" Ashta Dwar Devatas" (Eight Welcoming Dieties) of the subcontinent and is known as Western’s Sentinel God. During the reign of Moguls (about 1600 years before), there was a' kevda' (Flower tree) Jungle at the foot of the hill where the temple of the 'Swayambhu' Ganapati is presently situated. Here lived Balbhatji Bhide, a brahmin, who was a renter of the village, during the moghul period. Bhide encountered a major personal problem. Bhide being a determined person, that he was, made up his mind to give up food and water till being relieved of the personal calamity. He stayed in the Kevda - Jungal for penance and to worship his tutelary direty' mangalmurti' (Lord Ganesh) during this period, Bhide had a vision about Lord Ganesh who said, “I have come to Aagargule (Ganesh Gule) to fulfill the wishes of my devotees. You worship and propitiate here, and will be relieved of all your difficulties”

Description:-
Dukes Nose near Khandala which is named after Duke Wellington, is a huge pinnacle seen while traveling from Mumbai to Pune. The sight from top is unique and magnificent as one sees a vast landscape and the winding Mumbai-Pune expressway cutting through the ghats and trains chugging along the tracks.
It's famous for rappelling, rock climbing and valley crossing activities.
Rappelling (English Name) also known as abseiling (German Name) is a method of a quick and safe descend after a climb. It’s an act of descending a mountain face by sliding down a rope, which is attached to a body harness and fastened to an overhead projection, with sufficient friction provided as to make the speed of descent controllable.
